The Forever War won both the Nebula and Hugo awards for best novel, and is frequently recommended as one of the best sci-fi books— so, I guess it’s fair to say my expectations were pretty high. The book delivered, somewhat. Haldeman is a good writer, but his story wandered quite a bit, and the connections to the Vietnam war were mostly lost on me (perhaps unsurprising given my lack of exposure to that war). I still enjoyed The Forever War, and found its descriptions of military life to be humorously accurate. It was a good read.
