The Gunslinger introduces a new, adult, fantasy world into the minds of readers. I particularly enjoyed the world-building aspects of King’s writing; he often throws unknown words into the pages that go completely unexplained except a slight hint as to what sort of mysterious creature or idea he might be referring to. I enjoyed the drip of world-building information as the book continues, and it is the main motivator making me want to read more. In this first book of the series, the Gunslinger steps into what appears to be some sort of post-apocalyptic world, where mad people and thieves wait around each corner. The Gunslinger is not a particularly likable character, but the characters he deals with are much worse; in this world, people are too desperate to spare any unnecessary kindness. Although the world in which its events occur is huge, the book’s story is small and sensible and easy to follow. A great introduction to the series which I may one day read.
